  • Playing for Mike: Abu Dhabi (green) and Dubai are playing a series of friendlies to raise money for the Mike Ballard foundation.

Abu Dhabi secured local rugby league bragging rights as a select side ran in five tries to beat Dubai 28-22 in their charity clash at Zayed Sports City last night.

Ranato Tikoisolone and Joshua Navabale both bagged a brace, while Pinati Lui crossed the whitewash for the home side’s other score.

Abu Dhabi coach Tony Scott, whose side led 14-4 at the interval, said: “The Dubai boys were strong tonight, they came out and stuck to their game plan, played really well. We got sucked into their game and struggled but we had enough good players to bring it home.”

The game was part of a series of fundraising events put on by the Mike Ballard Foundation in order to raise awareness and funds for the 29-year-old prop, who has not been able to walk since suffering a spinal injury last month.

Scott added: “It was good to see everyone pulling together for Mike. We saw a message that he sent us today and we had some t-shirts made up.”
