  • It’s almost become a tradition, celebrating Rafael Nadal’s birthday every year in the second week of Roland Garros, even though this time the Spaniard got a cake that was so huge, it could have been a wedding cake.

After his press conference, the Spaniard received more cake from Spanish TV and considering he can’t feast on all that sweet stuff without messing up his strict diet, he walked over to the press officers’ room and presented them with one of his birthday treats.

Not that we needed any extra reasons to like him, but cake certainly can skew the few who’ve been undecided.

During his presser, Nadal was hounded by a journalist, who wanted him to admit that in the back of his head, he must believe he is better than Roger Federer given his 20-10 head-to-head record lead over the Swiss.

The Mallorcan has lots of experience answering this question but yesterday he got a bit creative. He said: “At the end, if you play a league and, for example, I don’t know, Chelsea beat Manchester United in both matches during the season, but Manchester United won the Premier League, the better team is Manchester United. That’s an example.”

    Don't go mad, go mental

Elsewhere, after Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny provided the viral video of the week with his nine-time racquet smash episode during his fourth round loss to Tommy Haas, the German said he actually liked his opponent’s meltdown.

“Tough to ask me, because I love that stuff,” Haas said when questioned about the incident. “I want to actually look at it a couple of times and watch it on the screen.

“I enjoy seeing some of the that stuff, emotions, let it out there. It’s not always fun to just see somebody in a cool, cool state of mind. It’s fun. It’s nice. He’s done some crazy stuff in the past when he hit the racquet on his head. I was not hoping for that again, but that was fun to see."

On his own previous meltdown in Australia, which had also gone viral, Haas added: “It’s funny, because, you know, Roger (Federer) and I actually joke about the video quite a bit, and we know it pretty much by heart now.”

    Life of Maria

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova says she already knows the title of the book she plans to write about herself in the future and we were happy to know that it’s not going to be called ‘Sugarpova’.

While she has no current plans for publishing an autobiography, she says she’d love to do it someday.
