  • Struggles: Wawrinka.

Stan Wawrinka insists that Nick Kyrgios has not apologised to the people who were hurt by the Aussie’s vulgar remarks on court during their match in Montreal last week but the Swiss world No 5 is trying to focus on moving past the incident in order to get ready for the US Open.

Wawrinka had to fight hard to recover from a set down against Croatian teenager Borna Coric in the Cincinnati second round yesterday and admits it has not been easy staying concentrated on tennis over the past few days as he is still suffering from the backlash of Kyrgios’ comments about his personal life.

“I’m dealing with all the s*** and I’m trying to put away as much as I can,” said Wawrinka after his 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Coric. “He didn’t really apologise to the people. He should. That’s it. That simple.”

Wawrinka fired 16 aces in his match with Coric but could only break serve once in seven chances. The reigning French Open champion next faces another Croatian, ace machine Ivo Karlovic, in the last 16.

“I’m there, I’m trying to do my job… today I’m happy with the way I fought, even if I was playing bad tennis,” Wawrinka said on Sky Sports. “But the most important thing is the win.”

On his trouble with Kyrgios, he added: “I’m trying to put it away, but what’s happened, people don’t see exactly the consequences for everybody. So I’m trying to put it away.

“He didn’t apologise, so no, but I don’t want to talk about him, thank you.”

Thanasi Kokkinakis, Kyrgios’ friend who was dragged into the mess when his name was mentioned in the comments made, lost in the second round to 12th-seeded Richard Gasquet 7-6 (5), 6-2 in one hour and 40 minutes.

Women’s top seed Serena Williams kicked off her title defence with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Tsvetana Pironkova.

Williams double-faulted seven times but still managed to save all three break points she faced during the encounter to set up a third round with Italian Karin Knapp.
