Australian Nick Kyrgios advanced to the second round of the Malaysian Open on Monday after scoring an easy victory over Colombian Santiago Giraldo in Kuala Lumpur.
Playing for the first time since a first round loss to Andy Murray at the US Open, Kyrgios looked in fine form as he won the first set 6-1 before Giraldo withdrew with an illness, trailing 1-2 in the second.
“My goal is to win this tournament. I hadn’t played in many tournaments the past few weeks, but I have been doing a lot of hard work these past few weeks and it showed today,” said Kyrgios, whose mother is Malaysian.
“I am disappointed I could not play until the end, but I played really well. I wish him (Giraldo) all the best and hope he recovers soon.”
World No8 David Ferrer is the top seed in Kuala Lumpur.
