  • Expert advice: Enqvist is a former world No4 and has a lot to offer to tennis enthusiasts.

Tennis-mad UAE residents will have the chance to learn from a true champion next week as Thomas Enqvist holds a series of coaching clinics at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort.

The 1999 Australian Open finalist will be at the JA Golf Resort from Saturday until March 1 and will be putting on three 45-minute coaching sessions per day.

The lessons are open for people of all ages and experience from enthusiastic children all the way up to seasoned players who may want to hone their skills.

Sessions can be booked on an individual basis (Dh490) where players will get to share the court with the right-hander on their own or on a “semi-private” basis (Dh335 per person) where two people will be put through their paces by the Swede.

On top of that, players will be able to see exactly where they are going right or wrong with a 30-minute video analysis session after they have stepped off the court, for an additional Dh300.

The Swede enjoyed a successful professional career that spanned 15 years and included an appearance in the Australian Open final, in 1999, where he lost to Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

His success in Melbourne helped Enqvist to a career-high ranking of No4 in the world by the end of that year, and in all he would grace the top 10 on four occasions during his professional career.

Enqvist was also named ATP Tour’s most improved player in 1995 and went on to win at least one tour title in six consecutive seasons up to 2000. In all the Swede won 19 ATP titles and earned more than $10 million (Dh36.7m) in prize money.

Enqvist is also Sweden’s Davis Cup captain and it is no surprise therefore that the 39-year-old is now in demand for his coaching skills as players hope that a little bit of his magic rubs off on them.

If you would like to get racquet on ball with a great of the game, then you can contact the Sunball Tennis Academy at the JA Golf Resort on 04 815 5058 or email jagr@ jaresorts.com for information.

The sessions are being run by Sunball, who brought Enqvist’s countryman Jonas Bjorkman to the UAE for a similar and successful training camp in Jebel Ali last October.

Sunball Tennis Academy are an international school that offer lessons for children, beginners, advanced players and professionals. They operate at JA Golf Resort on four cultivated hard courts.

So, whether you consider yourself a tennis veteran or are just about to take your first steps onto a court, Enqvist’s visit to the UAE could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
