FERNANDO VERDASCO (ESP) vs STAN WAWRINKA (SUI – X3)
Potential first round shock alert. Verdasco is enjoying a positive season and has already beaten Wawrinka once this year, at Queen’s Club.
The Swiss was a semi-finalist last year but after a strong showing in Montreal, he has knocked out of Cincinnati in the third round after skipping Rio due to a back injury.
SPORT360 PREDICTS: Wawrinka in five sets
LUKAS ROSOL (CZE) vs ANDY MURRAY (GBR – X2)
Murray has done his best to play down the previous animosity between the two, with the Brit infamously claiming “Everyone hates you” during a match in Munich last year.
At face value, this could be a tricky test given Rosol’s talent and giant-killing ability but he is 3-9 in his last 12 singles matches and 1-5 at the US Open.
SPORT360 PREDICTS: Murray in straight sets
JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO (ARG) vs DIEGO SCHWATRZMAN (ARG)
While there are 73 places between them in the rankings, it is Del Potro who’s the favourite given his run in Rio and history at the US Open.
That said, this is only his second grand slam since Australia in 2014 and his countryman is a tricky left-hander. Although Schwartzman is 2-4 on hard courts this year.
SPORT360 PREDICTS: Del Porto in four sets
KATERYNA KOZLOVA (UKR) vs VENUS WILLIAMS (USA – X6)
Venus’ quarter-final finish last year was her best performance at Flushing Meadows since 2010, and who’s to say she can’t have another strong run.
Kozlova doesn’t tend to face elite opponents often with the highest-ranked player she has beaten this year being Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko (No39) in June.
SPORT360 PREDICTS: Venus in straight sets
SERENA WILLIAMS (USA – X1) vs EKATERINA MAKAROVA
A replay of the 2014 semi-final in which Serena won 6-1, 6-3.
The Russian is one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the draw and with Williams free of pain but still not 100 per cent, this won’t be straightforward.
Makarova’s record against top 10 players in 2016 is 4-3 and she’ll provide a real test for the world No1.
SPORT360 PREDICTS: Serena in three sets
