  • Fighter: Munro has been in a coma since December last year.

Friends of Mally Munro, a long-time resident of Dubai and a die-hard golf and Manchester United fan, are getting together tomorrow to organise a golf day to raise $100,000 (Dh367,300) to cover the cost of an air ambulance to the UK and his hospital bill.

The 67-year-old Munro, who came to Dubai 36 years ago, has been in a coma since December 21 last year following a brain haemorrhage, and needs to be air-lifted to Manchester.

The Mally Golf Day on Thursday at Arabian Ranches Golf Club will be followed by a social evening in the month of June.

The day will be followed by a dinner, which includes an auction and raffle draw, at Dh1,000 per person.

As part of the golf day, all 18 holes were up for sponsorship at Dh3,500 each, and such is the goodwill enjoyed by the gregarious Munro, all of them have been taken well before the event.

The tournament is a four-man scramble format with a shotgun start at 13:30, and over 50 players have already booked their places.

“We can accommodate up to 92 players, so there are still places up for grabs,” said Joe Hanson, a friend of Munro and the event organiser.

“Munro is a very well-known and loved figure in the UAE and has been a very generous man. It’s amazing how he has touched the lives of so many people while living here, which explains why there is such an interest in the tournament.”

Munro is a founding member of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, and was also one of the earliest members of Dubai Country Club.

He had a roofing business, which suffered during the economic downturn, but despite the tough times, he always had the desire to live in Dubai.

Hanson said efforts are on to get someone from Manchester United to speak at the social evening in June, which will also include the mega auction.

Some of the items to come under the hammer that night will include signed memorabilia from Greg Norman, Gareth Bale, Henrik Stenson and Teddy Sheringham.
