  • Super start: Over 30 children participated in the inaugural Al Ain Schools League.

The Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club's first ever golf event for local schools at its Academy Course proved to be a great success with a field of over 30 children taking part.

The eventual winners were the team from Al Ain International School, comprising of Dane Sandford Junior, Daniel Whittaker, Peter Whittaker, Leia Holden, Lewis Chaffen, Ameerah Kohn, Ethan Hynes, Amelie Kohn, Ben Abbot and Holden Stone, with their combined score of eight-over par.

The two other schools in the running, Brighton College and Al Ain English Speaking School, both received silver medals.

The event was made possible by the support of Eastern Motors, an Al Fahim Group company.

Club Head Professional, Fraser Mclaughlan, said: “This is something we have talked about introducing in Al Ain for some time now.

“Having the first event at this time of the year was a slight gamble as we were not sure on the interest it would receive but thankfully, students of the participating schools were not put off by the temperature.

“We also had a team that wanted to join from the Emirates National School but a clash with their school exams meant they could not take part. There is also interest from a further three schools to be part of the Al Ain Schools League and we will be putting the dates and format together, ready for them when they return after their summer holidays.”

Luke Plumb, the Tournament Coordinator at the AESGC, added: “The majority of children participating have come through our Junior Program here, and as the School League grows, it will only be great in allowing more of youngsters here in Al Ain a chance to get into golf.”
