Nationals battle hard before losing narrowly

Hosts Emirates Golf Club (EGC) edged out the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) and the UAE Scratch League team in a hardfought match by 2.5 points to 1.5.

The 18-hole fourball scratch matchplay event – the first of the 2014-2015 season for the EGF team, took place at the Faldo course of Emirates Golf Club.

The EGF & UAE scratch team comprised of UAE nationals – Sohail Al Marzouqi, Abdulla Al Musharrakh, Hasson Al Musharrakh, Khalid Yousef, Rashid Hamood, Faris Al Mazroui, Abdulla Al Qubaisi and Ahmed Skaik. All of these players are members for the UAE national golf team.

The EGF & UAE Scratch Team’s points came from Khalid Yousef and Faris Al Mazroui, who won their match, and Abdulla Al Musharrakh and brother Hasson Al Musharrakh, who tied their match.

Greg Holmes, the UAE national coach, said: “This is a great opportunity for the UAE national team to participate in the Scratch League because not only does it give the team respectable competition, but it also allows the national team to play with the UAE golfing community.”

Ron Schuman and Maddie Fourie qualify from Al Gazal

Ron Schuman and Maddie Fourie will hope to take their impressive form from the sands of Al Ghazal in Abu Dhabi to the plush green fairways of Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club after winning the latest Daman Investments International Pairs qualifier.

Schuman and Fourie kept their ball in play on Al Ghazal’s tight, stake-defined fairways and putted beautifully on the sand course’s smooth ‘browns’ to become the fourth duo to qualify for next May’s final at the Creek.

A score of 41 stableford points saw them pip Phil Wilkes and Bernie Blanchard by a stroke in the betterball pairs format. Jaco and Liz Breytenbach also finished on 40 points and were placed third after countback.

The Daman Investments International Pairs series gathers momentum with five qualifying tournaments scheduled throughout November, with Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and Abu Dhabi City Golf Club next up on November 14 and 15 respectively.
