  • Third strike: Edward Jones.

Dubai-based Edward Jones put in a commanding performance to record his third win on the trot in the Indy Lights.

Presented by Cooper Tires Round 3 on the streets of Long Beach in California, and in the process extend his lead at the top of the standings in his rookie year.

Jones, who had a disappointing practice session on Friday, where he finished seventh fastest, recovered to record the second fastest time in second practice and then subsequently qualify from fourth on the grid on Saturday for yesterday’s race.

Lining up pole-starter Jack Harvey, who incidentally had posted a new lap record in the dying seconds of the qualifying session on Saturday, Jones wasted little time in first nailing Kyle Kaiser, who retired following an incident, and then Spencer Pigot to take second.

Pigot though chased hard after Harvey also retired following an incident, but Jones, now in the lead, prevailed for his third win.

Jones said: “I knew it was going to be a bit hectic at the start because the temperatures were cold, the tyres were cold. I didn’t get the best start and dropped back to fifth.

“Then I had to deal with Spencer. You don’t want to make any mistakes. I risked it a bit but fortunately, I didn’t make any mistakes and that’s what kept me the lead.”

Jones is now on 94 points and leads the standings with Pigot (69) and Harvey (61) in second and third respectively
