  • Leading the pack: Edward Jones.

Dubai-based Edward Jones was on the pace in free practice in round three of the Indy Lights in Birmingham, Alabama in the USA late last night.

The young Briton though first had a sedate outing on the 17-turn course in free practice one, recording a best time 1:13.854 on the 3.70km-long track to finish sixth overall.

However, Jones upped the ante in FP 2, going fastest in a time of 1:12.978, going 0.872sec faster than FP1.

Spencer Pigot and Max Chilton, who drove for two seasons in Formula One until last year, topped the timesheets in F1 in first and second respectively while the pair had to settle for second and third in FP2.

Jones and his Carlin team might not have been especially well known on the circuits in US prior to the start of the season, but they have made their presence felt by claiming three straight victories with the new Dallara IL-15 chassis powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged Mazda MZR-R engine.

Jones dominated the opening two races in St Petersburg, Florida, then won again last Sunday in Long Beach, California.

Jones has won the 2013 European F3 Open series title and was a podium finisher last year in the more senior FIA European F3 Championship despite missing a portion of the season due to injury. He will now be hoping to make it four wins in a row.
