  • Taking charge: Aaqib Javed.

Despite the hot climate, UAE Under-19 coach Aaqib Javed believes his players can benefit from outdoor training sessions in their preparations for the ACC Premier League in Malaysia.

He took charge for the first time since the final 14 were selected last week, overseeing the two-hour session outdoors as opposed to the air-conditioned indoors at Dubai’s ICC Academy Sunday.

With temperatures likely to be 30 degrees and above in Kuala Lumpur, Javed said it was key that his players get an idea of what conditions they could face.

“It’s going to be very humid and hot in Malaysia,” said the 43-year-old. “That is why I’ve taken the sessions outside just so they can feel physically and mentally of what it will be like in Malaysia so they can be ready to take the challenge.

“After 25 runs or two or three overs, it’s really hard for anyone to get going but if you train well according to the conditions that will be greatly beneficial.”

With matches against Afghanistan, Malaysia, Nepal, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait between August 28 to September 3, Javed feels he has a good balanced squad that can impress.

“Yodhin Punja is the leading bowler and he would be key,” he said. “Then there’s a leg-spinner Naseer Ud Din, who is very exciting and can bowl googly.

“The captain Waruna Perera is very good and he will be a key factor for us while Ethan Holmes is an aggressive hitting batsmen so it’s an overall balanced squad which I’m happy with.”
