Now approaching the first stage of its latest season, the World Chess Grand Prix opener will be held at the Sharjah Chess and Cultural Club.

Covering an area of 34,000 cubic feet, it is peculiar the venue – regarded as the world’s largest chess club – was never previously considered on the international stage.

No emirate or nation in the Middle East has ever hosted a world-respected chess event but that is about to change, with local grandmaster Salem Saleh on course to become the first Emirati to take part in a World Championship event.

As the first stage of the FIDE Grand Prix, the series will now accommodate more players, seeing 18 players rather than the traditional 12-player format. This roster of grandmasters will keep one eye on the chessboard and the other on the prize purse of €130,000 (509,000 AED).
