Nights to forget for Barca.

It was a terrible Paris outing for Luis Enrique’s side but they still have a second leg to try and turn things around.

However, here, we look back at Barcelona’s five worst defeats in the Champions League in recent years.

These losses will not serve as good memories for Barca fans, but in truth, there’s few of them over the course of their glittering history.

Things, though, are not well at the moment – so that’s why we’ve delved back through the archives.

What’s gone wrong at Barca?

1) 1994 UEFA Champions League Final

Olympic Stadium, Athens

AC Milan 4-0 Barcelona

Johan Cruyff’s men were attempting to win the club’s second European Cup crown in the space of three years but the Catalans came up against a formidable AC Milan side in Greece.

Daniele Massaro’s first-half brace, a goal just after the break from Dejan Savicevic and a rare effort from Marcel Desailly wrapped up a memorable 4-0 victory for the Italian giants.

The defeat is remembered as one of the worst night’s in Barcelona’s history and considering Cruyff had the likes of Ronald Koeman, Pep Guardiola, Hristo Stoichkov and Romario in his starting line-up – it made the scale of the scoreline all the more shocking.

2) 2002 UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg

Nou Camp, Barcelona

Barcelona 0-2 Real Madrid

In 2002, Spanish football’s fiercest rivals were drawn against each other for the first time in European football’s chief competition since 1960.

And it’s not an experience Barcelona fans will remember fondly.

Real Madrid, who went onto win their ninth Champions League crown in Glasgow later that season, cruised past Barca in the first leg at the Nou Camp – winning 2-0.

Zinedine Zidane and Steve McManaman got the goals to silence the cathedral of Catalan football despite the hosts enjoying more possession and typical tiki-taka play throughout.

3) 2013 UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg

Allianz Arena, Munich

Bayern Munich 4-0 Barcelona

The whole tie, let alone just the first leg, is certainly one to forget for Barcelona fans.

Barca were thrashed in the opening fixture 4-0, as Bayern dismantled the pre-tournament favourites in style. It was their joint-worst defeat in Champions League football as Tito Vilanova’s side were crushed, with Thomas Mueller running riot for the Bavarians.

To compound matters further, Bayern, who were about to be taken over by Pep Guardiola after that season, beat Barcelona 3-0 on home soil in the second leg. Overall, the German giants recorded a 7-0 aggregate triumph.

It was a truly miserable night and Barca even left a half-fit Lionel Messi on the bench.

4) 2017 UEFA Champions League last 16 first leg

Parc des Princes, Paris

Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 Barcelona

Although there’s still half of this tie left to complete, the manner of Tuesday night’s drubbing in the French capital has further increased the pressure on under-fire boss Luis Enrique.

PSG out-fought and out-battled Barcelona all over the pitch and Unai Emery’s men will be confident of finishing the job in Spain.

The defeat will without doubt go down as one of Blaugrana’s most terrible nights in European football – but, with the MSN in their side, they do still have a chance to make amends for the first leg deficit.

5) 1997 UEFA Champions League Group Stages

Nou Camp, Barcelona

Barcelona 0-4  Dynamo Kyiv

This Group C loss in 1997 came as a shock and something of a giant-killing.

Valeriy Lobanovskiy’s team outwitted Louis van Gaal’s men at the Nou Camp, with Andriy Shevchenko netting a superb first-half hat-trick and Serhiy Rebrov then adding a fourth in a memorable 4-0 rout for the Ukrainian outfit.

It was certainly a night to forget for a Barcelona team, which included Luis Figo as captain and Brazilian star Rivaldo.
