West Indies produced a defiant batting display to deny India victory and draw the second Test in Jamaica.

Resuming on 48 for four – and still needing another 246 to make India bat again – the hosts had an eye on the weather which had restricted the fourth day to only 15.5 overs.

The storm clouds stayed away this time, but the West Indies did not need any help for their salvation as Roston Chase’s unbeaten 137 steered them to 388 for six when the game was called a draw.

Chase’s career-best score in only his second Test match was compiled from 269 balls and included 15 fours and a six.

India, seeking to take a 2-0 series lead after winning the first Test in Antigua by an innings, were denied an early breakthrough as Chase and Jermaine Blackwood provided firm resistance.

Blackwood reached 50 in back-to-back innings for the first time, but he finally fell for 63 as the diving Cheteshwar Pujara snaffled him at short leg from Ravichandran Ashwin’s off-spin.

The fifth-wicket partnership was worth 93 but West Indies – dismissed cheaply for 196 in their first innings – were in no mood to let the rescue mission slip.

Chase and Shane Dowrich put on 144 in 38 overs before the wicket-keeper was dismissed in controversial circumstances.

Dowrich had reached 74 from 114 balls when he was adjudged leg before to Amit Mishra, even though television replays showed there was an inside edge before the ball struck the pad.

With no Decision Review System in place, however, Dowrich had to depart and West Indies were still 19 runs short of making India bat again.

But Chase and Jason Holder (64 not out) batted responsibly to share an unbroken partnership of 103 and thwart India.

West Indies captain Holder told Sky Sports 4: “I asked the guys for an improvement from the last Test match and they really showed that.

“We asked the guys to show fight at the beginning of the day and we got a really good partnership there with Jermaine and Roston.

“Shane also showed the character we know he has and we prevailed in the end.”

The third Test of the four-match series starts in St Lucia on August 9.
