The International Cricket Council (ICC) have confirmed India as the new number one Test team after the latest update to the world rankings.

Virat Kohli’s men cruised to a 3-0 series win over New Zealand, meaning no team can overtake them until they face England at home next month.

India (115) are closely followed by Pakistan (111), with Australia (108) ahead of England (108) on decimal points.

Speaking after beating the Blackcaps, Kohli said: “It’s an honour and a moment of great pride to receive the ICC Test Championship mace. To be recognised as the best in the traditional form of the game is as good as it gets for any team and stuff that dreams are made of.”

“If we have been able to become the best in the world, it is because there is a lot of bonding among team members and there is always someone to raise his hand in a difficult situation. I think that is what makes a top side,” said the 27-year-old.

Kohli made it clear that he wants the current Indian team to be remembered as one of the best teams of all time and is confident that, unlike some Indian sides of previous generations, the current bunch will perform well away from home as well.

“We all grow up playing cricket, hoping to represent our country in Test cricket. But to be part of a team that does well continuously in Test cricket is something altogether different. I’m confident we will continue to win matches at home as well as abroad in the coming seasons. I want this team to be remembered as one of the finest Test teams ever,” Kohli said.
