10 bespectacled cricketers in the history of the game as Pakistan's Imam ul Haq becomes the latest

Debut ton man Imam ul Haq becomes latest cricketer to wear glasses.

Pakistan’s Imam ul Haq announced himself in style to international cricket when scored a century on debut in the third ODI against Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Apart from the achievement of a debut ton, Imam also became the latest to join a unique club of cricketers who have worn spectacles while playing.

In its history, cricket has had several players who have played the game with glasses on. We look at nine others apart from Imam who have rocked the bespectacled look.

Charles Coventry

The 34-old batsman has played 39 ODIs for Zimbabwe in his career apart from two Tests and 13 T20Is. Son of international umpire Charles Coventry, the player is the youngest from his country to play first-class cricket at 15 years of age.

Narendra Hirwani

The leg-spinner played 17 Tests for India picking up 66 wickets. He is most famous for picking up eight wickets on his debut Test against the West Indies in Chennai.

Geoff Boycott

Now a famous commentator, former England batsman Geoff Boycott famously wore glasses in his early playing days in the 1960’s before transitioning to contact lenses. The former England skipper played 108 Tests for his country.

Zaheer Abbas

Nicknamed the ‘Asian Bradman’, former Pakistan skipper Zaheer Abbas is one of the greatest cricketers to have come out of the country. He played 78 Tests for Pakistan scoring 12 centuries in the process.

David Steele

The former England man only played eight Tests in his career but is famously remembered for taking on the likes of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson of Australia wearing glasses in his debut match in the 1975 Ashes.

Anil Kumble

India’s highest Test wicket taker, former leg-spinner Anil Kumble actually began his playing career with a bespectacled look. It was only later in his career that he would transition to contact lenses like Boycott.

Daniel Vettori

The former New Zealand skipper is one of the only eight cricketers to have taken 300 Test wickets and scored 3000 runs. One of the greatest players to ever represent the Black Caps, Vettori was usually seen with glasses when playing.

Clive Llyod

The two-time World Cup winning former captain of the West Indies is one of the biggest legends to have ever played the game. Even more remarkable is the fact that Llyod batted with glasses against the great pacers of the 1970’s.

Virender Sehwag

The former swashbuckling India opener Virender Sehwag is another one who is famous for wearing glasses while batting. The Delhi man did not require glasses for the most part of his career but did turn towards them in the latter periods.
