India ended day one of the second Test on 317-4, thanks to centuries from skipper Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara. While Pujara was dismissed for 119, Kohli remained unbeaten on 151 at the end of day’s play on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, India looked in big trouble after losing both openers with just 22 runs on the board.

KL Rahul, making a return after missing out due to a hamstring injury, was dismissed without troubling the scorers. His opening partner Murali Vijay looked in fine touch, hitting four glorious boundaries before falling to a short-pitched delivery from James Anderson which took him by surprise.

Anderson, who replaced Chris Woakes in England’s XI, was easily the most impressive of the bowlers for the visitors. The Lancashire seamer ended the day with figures of 3-44 on a pitch that doesn’t seem to have much in it for the faster bowlers.

But the headlines will definitely belong to India’s pair of Kohli and Pujara. Coming together with India tottering at 22-2, the duo added 226 runs for the third wicket.

The hosts lost Ajinkya Rahane [23] late in the day, but will be pleased with the way the day went about.
