The Euros has seen plenty of controversial moments in years gone by.

1. Netherlands ‘88

Ronald Koeman angered the Germans after their 2-1 win in the semi-final after he pretended to wipe his backside before swapping shirts with Olaf Thon.

2. Italy ‘04

Italy beat Bulgaria to all but guarantee progression but if Sweden and Denmark played out a draw higher than 1-1 they

would qualify… they drew 2-2.

3. Spain ‘96

England would win on pens but they rode their luck as Julio Salinas had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside and Jose Luis Caminero should have won a penalty.

4. France ‘92

Stuart Pearce was having a frank exchange with Jocelyn Angloma during England’s Euro ‘92 clash with France before Basile Boli headbutted Pearce.

5. Portugal ‘00

With the match six minutes away from a shootout, the linesman awarded a pen to France after Abel Xavier’s apparent handball, much to the fury of the Portuguese.
