GOALKEEPER: MICHAEL MCGOVERN

A relatively unknown player before the tournament, the goalkeeper shone in the narrow defeat to Germany and made 15 saves over the course of the group stage.

RIGHT-BACK: DARIJO SRNA

Not only did the Croatia captain perform impressively, he managed to do so while coping with the passing of his father. Srna flew home for the funeral but played all three matches.

CENTRE-BACK: MICHAL PAZDAN

Not many would’ve heard of the Polish defender but he’s been instrumental in his side’s incredible effort to keep clean sheets in all three of their group games to qualify for the next round despite their blunt attack.

CENTRE-BACK: LEONARDO BONUCCI

The composed, imposing centre-back has impressed for the Azzurri and not only defensively, with his wonderful pass to Emanuele Giaccherini seeing off Belgium in the group opener.

LEFT-BACK: JONAS HECTOR

He may be the only regular starter in the German side not have featured in the 2014 World Cup squad but he hasn’t looked out of place at all. Solid at the back, Hector has been arguably the most reliable left-back of the tournament.

CENTRE-MIDFIELD: TONI KROOS

Incredible vision and technique makes the 26-year-old one of the best midfielders in Europe. He was deservedly named man-of-the-match in Germany’s 2-0 win against Ukraine.

CENTRE-MIDFIELD: IVAN RAKITIC

The Barcelona man has been at his dynamic best. His forward runs and link-up play have added punch to Croatia’s attack.

ATTACKING MIDFIELD: ANDRES INIESTA

Spain may not have been at their imperious best so far but Iniesta certainly has. The creative midfielder has pulled the strings in midfield and was ever so elegant even in the defeat to Croatia.

RIGHT WING: GARETH BALE

The Real Madrid attacker talked a good game and backed it up with performances on the field. Bale netted in all three matches as Wales won Group B.

LEFT WING: DIMITRI PAYET

Initially dismissed by France boss Didier Deschamps, the West Ham man’s form led to a recall and what an inspired decision it has proven to be. Outstanding for the hosts with two man-of-the-match displays and as many goals. Player of the tournament so far.

STRIKER: ALVARO MORATA

The much-vaunted striker has added a few million to his price tag in France, netting three goals after a frustrating display in Spain’s Euro 2016 opener against the Czech Republic.
