PREMIER LEAGUE

Marten de Roon’s stoppage-time header earned Middlesbrough a 1-1 draw at Manchester City to leave Pep Guardiola’s side in a vulnerable position at the Premier League summit.

Sergio Aguero’s 150th City goal looked to have sent his side three points clear, but De Roon brought the Etihad Stadium back to earth following Tuesday’s brilliant 3-1 win over Barcelona in the Champions League.

City’s slip-up means Chelsea can surpass them if they overcome Everton in Saturday’s late game, while Arsenal and Liverpool — both just a point off the pace — will also have designs on top spot.

Elsewhere, bottom club Sunderland ended their wait for a first win of the season at the 11th attempt by coming from behind to win 2-1 at Bournemouth despite having Steven Pienaar sent off.

After Adam Smith had teed up Dan Gosling to bundle in an 11th-minute opener for Bournemouth, Victor Anichebe equalised with his first Sunderland goal.

Pienaar was sent off just before the hour after receiving a second yellow card for a lunge on Junior Stanislas, but Jermain Defoe netted a 74th-minute winner from the spot after Smith felled Anichebe.

There was late drama at Turf Moor as Burnley withstood a Crystal Palace fightback to prevail 3-2 courtesy of Ashley Barnes’s 94th-minute strike.

Stoke City drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with Bojan Krkic exploiting an error by home goalkeeper Adrian to equalise in the 75th minute after a Glenn Whelan own goal had put the hosts in front.

LA LIGA

Atletico Madrid’s La Liga title hopes suffered another serious setback as two Real Sociedad penalties inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Champions League finalists.

Carlos Vela opened the scoring nine minutes into the second-half before handing responsibilities from the spot to Willian Jose to seal Sociedad’s third straight win 15 minutes from time.

A second league defeat in three games means Atletico remain three points behind league leaders Real Madrid, but their city rivals can extend that advantage to six when they host Leganes on Sunday.

At the other end of the table, Granada remain rooted to the bottom and without a win this season after a 1-1 draw at home to Deportivo la Coruna.

Florin Andone handed the visitors the lead, but an own goal from Deportivo ‘keeper Przemyslaw Tyton salvaged a point for Granada nine minutes from time.

BUNDESLIGA

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted four goals as Borussia Dortmund routed bottom side Hamburg 5-2 away, while Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw by Hoffenheim.

The result at the Allianz Arena means second-placed RB Leipzig can now move level on points with Bayern at the summit if they win at home to mid-table Mainz on Sunday.

It was a fine result for Hoffenheim, who remain unbeaten this season under their 29-year-old coach Julian Nagelsmann.

But the day belonged to Aubameyang, who redeemed himself for a reported midweek indiscretion in Italy with four clinically taken goals as Dortmund won for the first time in five league games to go fifth.

In Munich, Bayern were denied a sixth straight win by third-placed Hoffenheim, who preserve their unbeaten record this season.

Hoffenheim’s Kerem Demirbay beautifully timed his arrival in the box to smash Nadiem Amiri’s pass into the top-left corner on 16 minutes, but the lead did not last.

When Douglas Costa fired in a cross, Hoffenheim midfielder Steven Zuber deflected the ball between his own goalkeeper’s legs for an own goal on 34 minutes with Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski waiting at the far post.
