PREMIER LEAGUE

Joe Allen’s close-range finish earned struggling Stoke a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford as Manchester United were made to pay for sloppy finishing.

Record signing Paul Pogba had enough chances to put the game to bed on his own but his wayward finishing, coupled with a fine performance from on-loan Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant, meant United had to wait 69 minutes for substitute Anthony Martial’s brilliant opener.

Tottenham Hotspur advanced their Premier League title credentials with a superb 2-0 victory on Sunday as Pep Guardiola tasted defeat for the first time as Manchester City manager.

An Aleksandar Kolarov own goal and a Dele Alli strike gave Spurs a third successive league win over City and manager Mauricio Pochettino could even afford for Erik Lamela to squander a second-half penalty.

Leicester‘s spluttering defence of the Premier League title suffered another blow after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Southampton at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

Arsenal bolstered their title challenge away to Burnley in Sunday’s late kick-off as they snatched the only goal of the match deep into stoppage time.

From a corner-kick, Theo Walcott’s flicked header saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain strike the ball onto an offside Laurent Koscielny’s hand before it ended up in the net.

LA LIGA

Atletico Madrid moved top of La Liga despite missing two penalties as Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro handed Diego Simeone’s men a 2-0 win at Valencia on Sunday.

Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves extended his exceptional penalty record as he denied Griezmann and Gabi from the spot either side of Griezmann’s opener just after the hour mark.

However, Gameiro finally sealed a deserved three points for Atletico in stoppage time to move a point clear of Real Madrid and two of Barcelona, who face Eibar and Celta Vigo respectively later on Sunday.

Real Madrid surrendered top spot in La Liga as they failed to win for a fourth consecutive game in a 1-1 draw at home to Basque minnows Eibar on Sunday.

Normal service appeared to have been resumed just nine minutes later when Cristiano Ronaldo’s lofted cross to the back post was headed home by Gareth Bale for his 50th La Liga goal.

However, Real were met with a cacophony of whistles at full-time as they failed to convert their pressure into a winner after the break.

SERIE A

Gonzalo Higuain hit a brace to help Juventus cement top spot in Serie A with a 3-0 win away at Empoli on Sunday.

The Turin giants missed a host of first-half chances before Argentine striker Paulo Dybala finally broke the deadlock on 65 minutes with a close-range strike.

It opened the floodgates, Higuain pouncing on Mario Lemina’s precision pass only two minutes later to beat Lukasz Skorupski from the edge of the area.

Three minutes after that, the Argentine cheekily dispossessed Marco Zambelli yards from the Empoli goal to round the Polish ‘keeper for his second of the day.

BUNDESLIGA

Schalke 04 ended a run of five consecutive defeats to move off the bottom of the Bundesliga on Sunday with a 4-0 thrashing of Champions League side Borussia Moenchengladbach as new-signing Breel Embolo scored twice.

LIGUE 1

A superb Mario Balotelli strike four minutes from time gave Nice a 2-1 win over Lorient on Sunday that left them top of the Ligue 1 table going into the international break.

Ricardo Pereira put Nice in front on the Cote d’Azur but Benjamin Moukandjo equalised in the second half and it looked as if Lucien Favre’s side would have to settle for a draw until Balotelli bent in a brilliant late winner.
