India secure series win

West Indies slumped to a series defeat on the final day of the third Test against India following a batting collapse that sent them spiralling to a 237-run loss.

India declared midway through the morning session in St Lucia, giving themselves a maximum of 87 overs to push for victory, but they needed just over half of those as the Windies were skittled for 108.

Darren Bravo provided the only semblance of resistance, with 59, but Marlon Samuels’ 12 was the next best score as the hosts’ meekly surrendered in a match that had appeared destined for a draw when the entire third day was lost to rain.

India had other ideas as they went after quick runs on the fifth morning, crashing 60 from nine overs, chiefly from Ajinkya Rahane’s bat as he finished unbeaten on 78.

Miguel Cummins profited from India’s haste to claim six for 48 as West Indies were left with a potentially-enticing target of 346.

Any suggestions they might chase a series-levelling win was off the radar once the hosts lost three wickets in 20 overs before lunch, and the procession continued after the break.

Mohammed Shami returned three for 15 while Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja claimed two wickets each as India went 2-0 up in the four-Test series.

The final Test begins on Friday at Port-of-Spain, where India will go top of the International Cricket Council’s rankings with a win.
