After losing the toss, India will be happy with their performance on day one of the third Test at Mohali – having restricted England to 268/8. The visitors, though, will be disappointed with some of their dismissals, getting out to some really loose shots.

In addition to Wriddhiman Saha, India also lost KL Rahul due to injury and Karun Nair was handed a Test debut. On the other hand, England made three changes to their line-up from Vizag – bringing in Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Gareth Batty for Ben Duckett, Stuart Broad and Zafar Ansari (the latter two being unfit).

The morning session wasn’t going as planned for India. The Virat Kohli-led side dropped Alastair Cook twice off the bowling of Mohammed Shami and it looked like the England captain would make the Indians pay as he scored six boundaries in the first hour.

It wasn’t to be as some disciplined bowling from India and some terrible shot-making from the England batsmen, especially Joe Root and Cook, saw England struggling at 51/3.

Jonny Bairstow was the pick of the English batsmen, notching up his tenth 50+ score in 2016. The Yorkshireman helped England to get to a respectable total, with some help from Jos Buttler who scored 43 on his comeback.

India got rid of Bairstow and Chris Woakes late in the day to take the honours on day one.

Jayant Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav picked up two wickets each while Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami picked up a wicket a piece.
