Australia on top.

Steve Smith registered his 19th Test century as Australia had a good day with the bat after electing to bat first in the third Test against India on Thursday.

At one point, Australia seemed to be in a bit of a bother, having lost four wickets with just 140 runs on the board. That was when Glenn Maxwell joined Smith in the middle and the duo have put on 159 unbeaten runs for the fifth wicket so far.

Maxwell brought up his first Test half-century and is batting on 82 at the end of play on day one. On the other hand, Smith is unbeaten on 117 and looks good for a really big score.

Earlier in the day, fast bowler Umesh Yadav picked up two wickets with some superb reverse swing.

For Australia, Matt Renshaw once again showed why he is rated so highly as he looked fluent during his knock of 44.

Apart from the scorecard, there was another worry for the Indian team as captain Virat Kohli was forced off the park after an injury to his right shoulder during the second session. He sat out the rest of the day.

BRIEF SCORES

Australia 299/4 [Smith 117*, Maxwell 82*, Umesh 2/63] vs India.

India captain Virat Kohli walked off the field after hurting his shoulder as he saved a boundary during the second session on day one of the third Test against Australia in Ranchi.

It was the 40th over of Australia’s first innings and Kohli, fielding at mid-on, sprinted and dived to stop a four from the bat of Peter Handscomb. Soon after, he was seen holding his right shoulder.

Indian physio Patrick Farhart was soon on the field and accompanied the Indian skipper to the pavilion.

In Kohli’s absence, it was vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane who took over the captaincy duties.

Indian fans will be hopeful that the injury to Kohli isn’t serious.

Which team do you think will come out on top? [Sportzpics]

With the series level at 1-1, the third Test between India and Australia at Ranchi promises to be a gripping encounter.

Australia won the toss and, unsurprisingly, decided to bat first. The visitors have made two changes – with Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins coming in for the injured duo of Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc.

On the other hand, India have stuck with their strategy of playing just four specialist bowlers. The one change they have made is the inclusion of the fit-again Murali Vijay for Abhinav Mukund.
