A brilliant bowling display from the Mumbai Indians saw them defeat the Delhi Daredevils by 14 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

Mitchell McClenaghan has been one of Mumbai’s most consistent performances in recent years and he was at it once again, taking three quick wickets to reduce Delhi to 24-6 as the visitors attempted to chase down a target of 143.

The New Zealand pacer was well supported by fellow quicks Mitchell Johnson, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya. Although Johnson did not pick up a wicket, he was very economical – conceding just 23 in his comeback match.

Bumrah bowled brilliantly in the death overs, just as Chris Morris [52* off 41 balls] and Kagiso Rabada [44 off 39 balls] threatened to pull off an unlikely victory for the Daredevils. The South Africa duo failed to score big against Bumrah due to some superb yorkers and clever variations in pace.

The Indian fast bowler’s impressive bowling resulted in two wickets, with just 21 runs coming off the bat in four overs.

The efforts of Rabada and Morris must be applauded, though, as they came together with the Daredevils flirting with breaking Rajasthan Royals’ record low IPL score of 58 back in 2009. They added a 91-run partnership, but it wasn’t enough as Mumbai registered their sixth consecutive win in this season’s IPL.

Earlier, fielding a strong bowling line-up, Delhi managed to restrict Rohit Sharma’s men to just 142-8 in their 20 overs. Amit Mishra and Pat Cummins were the pick of the Daredevils’ bowlers, picking up two wickets apiece.

Jos Buttler [28 off 18 balls], Kieron Pollard [26 off 29 balls], and Hardik Pandya [24 off 23 balls] got starts but none of the Mumbai batsmen were able to score build on starts on a pitch that had a lot of pace and bounce.

With this win, the Mumbai Indians have opened up a gap at the top of the table with 12 points from seven matches. On the other hand, the Daredevils have lost three matches in a row which sees them in fifth place with four points from six games.
