Jasprit Bumrah bowled a quite splendid Super Over to help Mumbai Indians defeat Gujarat Lions at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 154, Parthiv Patel began his innings in attacking fashion as Mumbai found themselves 40-0 after three overs, with 32 of those runs coming from Patel’s bat.

The run-out of Jos Buttler for nine did not slow down his opening partner as Patel went on to bring up his first half-century of the season before being dismissed for a 44-ball 70.

The visitors seemed to be cruising at one point as their score read 104-2, but some fine bowling from James Faulkner and Basil Thampi got Gujarat back into the contest.

Having slumped to 143-8, Mumbai needed 11 runs to win off the final over and they began in a spectacular manner as Krunal Pandya managed to hit a six off the first delivery of the over which was bowled by Irfan Pathan.

But Pathan, playing in his first match of the season, came back well and the situation came down to one run needed off the last ball with Lasith Malinga on strike. The Sri Lankan missed his shot and the ball went into the offside region where an alert Ravindra Jadeja managed to execute his second run-out of the over as Krunal was found short of his ground, thereby, setting up the season’s first Super Over.

Gujarat turned to James Faulkner with the ball for their Super Over while Buttler and Kieron Pollard came out to bat for Mumbai. Pollard managed to hit one four and one six, but wickets off consecutive deliveries after that meant that the Lions had a target of 12 to chase.

Bumrah started his over in the worst possible way, with a no-ball, but recovered brilliantly to concede just six runs in the over [only two of them coming off the bat] as he guided Mumbai to their seventh win of the season.

Earlier, some superb bowling from Mumbai saw the hosts restricted to 153-9 in their 20 overs with Krunal, Lasith Malinga, Bumrah, and Harbhajan Singh among the wickets.

Krunal was, in fact, named the Player of the Match for his excellent efforts with bat and ball. He first took three wickets for 14 runs from his four overs, before scoring a 20-ball 29 to take the game to a Super Over.

Ishan Kishan impressed with the bat before getting out two runs short of what would have been a well-deserved fifty.

With seven wins under their belt from nine matches, Mumbai are now second, equal on points with Kolkata Knight Riders but have a lesser run-rate.

The Lions, meanwhile, have just six points from nine games and need to win every match from here if they have to qualify for the playoffs.
