In club football, Simeone had fruitless spells with Velez Sarsfeld, Pisa and Sevilla but tasted his first triumph in style with Atletico Madrid, winning the Primera Division and Copa del Rey double in 1995-96.

Simeone departed Atletico in 1997 for Inter Milan. His first year at the San Siro ended with UEFA Cup glory as Lazio were beaten 3-0 in the final.

Two years later and Simeone was playing for Sven Goran Eriksson's all-conquering Lazio team, winning four trophies in his first 12 months in Rome.

Then came the piece de resistance, as Simeone led Atletico to La Liga glory for the first time since he won it as a player with the Rojiblancos. A draw in a thrilling match at Barcelona on the final day of the season confirmed the title.
