Real Madrid were saved from an embarrassing defeat at the Bernabeu as the reigning champions struck late to earn a 2-1 victory over Sporting on Wednesday night.

Bruno Cesar put the visitors in front early in the second-half and Sporting looked destined for all three points up until the 89th minute.

That was when Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to level with a superb free-kick before Alvaro Morata’s stoppage time effort spared Zinedine Zidane’s side’s blushes.

Sergio Aguero scored his second hat-trick of the season as Manchester City overpowered Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 in their delayed Champions League Group C opener.

Kelechi Iheanacho also got on the scoresheet late on as City made up for lost time after torrential rain washed out the first attempt to play the fixture at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.

Rampant Leicester marked their Champions League debut in stunning style as they thrashed Club Brugge 3-0.

Marc Albrighton netted the Foxes’ first-ever Champions League goal, and first in Europe since 2000, before Riyad Mahrez crashed in a brilliant free-kick.

Mahrez made it 3-0 with a second-half penalty with Leicester, who dominated at the Jan Breydel Stadium, top of Group G after Porto and Copenhagen drew 1-1.

Lyon eased the pressure on coach Bruno Genesio with a comfortable 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb to open their Champions League campaign.

Corentin Tolisso’s first-half opener was followed by goals from Jordan Ferri and Gnarly Cornet after the break to end a two-game losing run that had raised some questions about Genesio’s future.

Monaco ruined Tottenham‘s record-breaking night-out at Wembley as the French side earned a 2-1 win.

Goals from Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar put Monaco in command and although Toby Alderweireld got one back, Tottenham were unable to turn their second-half dominance into an equaliser.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with CSKA Moscow, with all four goals coming in the first-half.

Fellow Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund were more ruthless, smashing Legia Warsaw in a 6-0 away rout.

The only goalless game of the night came in Turin where Juventus were held 0-0 by Sevilla.
