  • Ajit Agarkar was one of the many names who Indian fans hoped would become the next Kapil Dev. To be fair to Agarkar, he had a better international career than most of the others tipped to step into the legendary all-rounder’s shoes.

In 2000, the Mumbaikar was one of India’s best bowlers in one-day cricket, having become the bowler who had taken the fewest matches to grab 50 wickets in ODIs a couple of years earlier [a record that has since been broken].

Agarkar also made a few handy contributions with the bat – the most famous of which came against Zimbabwe in an ODI at Rajkot in 2000.

Coming into bat at the death of the Indian innings, the then 22-year-old got to his half-century in just 21 deliveries – the fastest ever by an Indian cricketer in ODIs. At the end of the innings, he would be unbeaten on 67 from just 25 deliveries.

Exactly 16 years later, the record still stands for India and you can relive it in the video above.
