  • Liverpool should keep injury-prone striker Daniel Sturridge despite his ongoing fitness issues, according to club legend Robbie Fowler.

The England forward, 26, has featured in just 23 matches over the course of the past two seasons and rumours around Anfield have suggested Jurgen Klopp could move on the former Chelsea star.

However, Fowler, who himself struggled with injuries during his illustrious career on Merseyside, believes Sturridge is worth hanging onto if the club are going to build a squad capable of challenging for big honours.

The 40-year-old, who is in Dubai for a series of Liverpool Legends events, told Sport360: “Liverpool is all about trying to get a real decent squad and competition for places so we need to keep him. It’s not ideal because he’s not playing but I’ve been in the same situation before when I’ve been injured lots of times and I know how he feels, it’s a nightmare.

“I don’t think he wants to be injured, he wants to play and certainly I wouldn’t get rid of him, I don’t think Liverpool can afford to.”
