  • Bundesliga returned from its winter break with a bang, living up to its reputation as one of the most exciting leagues in the world. From wonder goals, to record-setting red cards, to curse-busting penalties, January had it all.

Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky had one of the highlights – or rather, lowlights – of the month when he handled the ball outside the box and was sent off just 125 seconds into the game. It was the earliest a goalkeeper had been sent off in Bundesliga history, and the second-earliest sending off for any player.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen saw their remarkable run of missed penalties come to an end, as set-piece specialist Hakan Calhanoglu finally converted from the spot. The goal ended a streak of four missed penalties in a row for Leverkusen.

Bayern were good for their usual share of highlights, with David Alaba and Robert Lewandowski in particular making their mark with some wonderful goals.

And because it’s January, there were also some noteworthy transfers. From one-time superstar-in-the-making Bojan Krkic arriving at Mainz to Dortmund snapping up Swedish wonderkid Alexander Isak, January was a busy month for German clubs.
