    ADIL KHALID

    The first Arab sailor to compete in the race – and complete it. Adil was just 22 when he made his Volvo Ocean Race debut as part of the Abu Dhabi crew in the last edition. A popular Olympian sailor, this year he is a senior member of the team.

    AHMED MARJANE
    The Gulf region has found a golf star. Morocco’s Marjane, 22, created history last month by becoming the first Arab to win a MENA Golf Tour event since its inception in 2011, a feat he achieved at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic by beating a strong international field.

    ALI MABKHOUT
    One of the stars of the UAE has also been in great form for his club Al Jazira. He was the top scorer at the Gulf Cup, finding the back of the net five times for the national side and his goals, nine so far, have taken Jazira to the top of the Arabian Gulf League.

    KHURRAM KHAN 
    The UAE cricket captain has been the stalwart of the team’s batting for a decade now. He helped UAE qualify for the World Cup in Australia next year and capped a great year by becoming the oldest player to score a one-day international century.
     
    MUTAZ ESSA BARSHIM
    Qatari high jumper Barshim has had a stellar year. The 2012 Olympic medalist became the World Indoor Champion, clearing seven consecutive heights on his first attempt, up to and incuding a new Asian Indoor record of 2.38m.
