  • Keaton Jennings endured another failure.

Joe Root fell at the stroke of tea as West Indies cut short England‘s attempts at a recovery in the third Test.

England’s top-order woes surfaced again after lunch, with Rory Burns and Joe Denly – England’s latest No 3 as he dropped down the order to accommodate Keaton Jennings – falling in quick succession to leave England wobbling at 69/3.

Skipper Root stitched together a 38-run partnership with Jos Buttler to steady the ship, but a soft dismissal ended his innings for just 15 runs – his seventh straight innings without a 50.

Earlier, Jennings, recalled to the side after being dropped for the second Test, showed no signs of having improved during his time off. In the space of three balls he survived an LBW call, with replays showing he would have been out had West Indies reviewed, and then an edge to slips which was dropped by Roston Chase. His painful innings was ultimately brought to an end by Keemo Paul, in for Jason Holder.

Though Burns and Denley survived until lunch, both fell soon after the break, with Paul accounting for Burns and Denly being pinned in front by Shannon Gabriel.

The bowling display vindicated stand-in captain Kraigg Brathwaite’s decision to put England’s embattled batting line-up in after winning the toss, as West Indies looked to complete a historic 3-0 “Blackwash” of the visitors.

Paul for Holder, who is suspended for a slow over rate during the second Test, was West Indies’ only change, while England brought in Mark Wood and Jennings for Sam Curran and Ben Foakes. This is Wood’s first Test since last May.
