  • At the age of 17 years and 292 days, Mumbai starlet Yashasvi Jaiswal became the youngest player in history to score a double ton in a List A game.

The Mumbai teenager performed the feat when he smashed 203 (154) against Jharkhand in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. The record was previously held by South African batsman Alan Barrow when he scored an unbeaten 202 for Natal in 1975. Barrow was 20 years and 276 days old at the time.

Jaiswal’s story is nothing short of extraordinary as six years ago, the teenager was selling street food to make ends meet before he shot to prominence during the Under-19 Asia Cup in Dhaka in October last year.

The teenager becomes the seventh Indian to score a List A double ton after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Karn Veer Kaushal and Sanju Samson. Kerala’s Samson set the record for the highest individual score in the Vijay Hazare trophy when he scored an unbeaten 212 just last week.

Jaiswal scored 140 of his 203 runs in boundaries, smashing 17 fours and 12 sixes in his rapid knock. He shared a 200-run partnership with fellow opener Aditya Tare in 34.3 overs and then added 105 runs for the second wicket with Siddhesh Lad. He reached his double century off just 149 deliveries with his captain Shreyas Iyer applauding from the other end.

The youngster put Jharkhand’s bowling attack to the sword and their bowling wasn’t exactly short of experience with the likes of Shabhaz Nadeem, Varun Aaron and Rahul Shukla in their ranks. Mumbai posted a mammoth 358/3 in their 50 overs after opting to bat first at Bengaluru.

This is Jasiwal’s third century in five 50-over games for Mumbai with the youngster previously scoring tons against Goa and Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The southpaw has raked up 401 runs at an average of 101.25 and is currently the highest scorer in the tournament.
