ICC Test rankings: Indian opener Rohit Sharma breaks into the top 10

    Rohit Sharma’s extraordinary return to Tests has powered him into the top ten of the ICC rankings for Test batsmen. The newly promoted Indian opener plundered 529 runs in four innings against South Africa, helping India claim maximum points from the three-match series in the ICC World Test Championship.

    The 32-year-old is now ranked tenth among batsmen in the longest format, moving up seven spots, with his maiden double ton in Tests.

    India has five batsmen in the top 20 – Virat Kohli (2nd), Cheteshwar Pujara (4th), Ajinkya Rahane (5th), Rohit Sharma (10th) and Mayank Agarwal (18th).

    Ravinchandran Ashwin has dropped to tenth position among Test bowlers in the ICC rankings after a poor show in Ranchi, in the third Test against South Africa. The off-spinner picked up just one wicket for 66 runs in two innings.

    Fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav have achieved their highest-ever rating points tally after a successful series. Shami is on 751 points and ranked 15th, while Yadav is on 624 points and ranked 24th. Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up 13 wickets in the recently concluded series, is 14th in the rankings with 753 points.

    Among all-rounders India’s Ravindra Jadeja is placed second in the rankings behind Jason Holder. He is now 53 points behind the West Indies skipper while Ashwin dropped to sixth place behind South Africa’s Vernon Philander.

    Jadeja not only picked up 13 wickets against the Proteas but also hit two half-centuries, finishing the series with 212 runs at an average of 70.67 with the bat.
