  • When Rohit Sharma leads India in Rajkot during the second T20I against Bangladesh, he will become the first Indian after Harmanpreet Kaur to play in 100 T20Is.

While his latest exploits at the top of the order has earned him plaudits as a Test opener, the languid right-hander made his mark in the shortest format with a superb unbeaten half-century against South Africa in his first ever innings , during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.

Twelve years and 99 games later, Rohit Sharma has firmly established himself as one of the greatest players in limited-overs cricket.

He is the highest run-getter in T20Is with 2452 runs and is one of the five batsmen in the world to have crossed the 2000-run mark in T20Is.

Speaking about the milestone in Delhi, Rohit had said: “It’s been a long journey since 2007, I made my debut in the T20 World Cup. There has been a lot ups and down in the last 12 years in this format particularly. This has taught me so many lessons going forward.

“When you come into the team as a youngster, you are trying to learn things which happened quite smoothly at start. Then with few ups and few downs, I have become a stronger player and understood my game really well.”

The 32-year-old has captained the Indian T20I team on 16 occasions, winning 12 of those matches.

The Nagpur man will also be looking to overtake Suresh Raina on the list of Indians with most runs in T20 cricket.

Rohit, who has 8321 runs, is third on the list behind Raina (8392) and Virat Kohli (8556).

Chris Gayle tops the overall list with 13,051 runs in T20 cricket.

Among men’s cricket, only Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik (111 matches) has played more games than Rohit.

The game at Rajkot is a must-win for the hosts after the defeat at Delhi, and Rohit will be hoping to commemorate the occasion by leading his side to victory.
