Former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith has denied that he has accepted to be the new Director of Cricket for South Africa and that he is still in discussions with the board over the role.
The 38-year-old, who was South Africa’s most successful Test captain, had turned down the job in November.
On November 14, Smith had declared in an official statement that he was withdrawing his application, claiming that his trepidation was due to doubts in the “levels of freedom and support” to initiate the required changes at the administrative level.
Cricket in South Africa isn’t in great shape with the ongoing Mzansi Super League (MSL), said to be running at a loss of $6.8-million this year.
The national team is without a coach and a selection panel with England set to arrive for a Test series at home in December.
“Contrary to media reports I have not been appointed Director of Cricket by CSA. As previously advised I withdrew my application for the role. I am, however, in ongoing discussions with CSA, but I still have real concerns, which I have reiterated to them.”
