Adam Zampa has been reprimanded by the International cricket Council after breaching its code of conduct in Australia’s battling 15-run World Cup win over the West Indies.

The Australia leg-spinner was heard using an audible obscenity by the umpires after completing the 29th over – his seventh – in the Windies’ ultimately futile pursuit of 289 at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

Zampa admitted to the level one offence, negating the need for a formal hearing, and one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record, with four in the space of 24 months leading to a possible ban.

The 27-year-old took one for 58 on a day where Nathan Coulter-Nile and Mitchell Starc starred as Australia maintained their 100 per cent record in the tournament.

Coulter-Nile was the unlikely hero with the bat as he hammered 92 from 60 balls from number eight in the order after Steve Smith (73) and Alex Carey (45) had helped Australia recover from 38 for four and 79 for five.

Wicketkeeper Carey was quick to credit both Smith and Coulter-Nile, who registered his highest score as a senior professional, for lifting Australia to a competitive total of 288 all out.

He said: “(Smith) batted beautifully, I thought his tempo, with lots of wickets falling around him, was outstanding and he showed his class again.

“Then to have (Coulter-Nile) play probably the innings of his life was something that I’m sure everyone enjoyed watching as well.

“I know he’s capable of striking the ball very cleanly, I’ve seen that a number of times now and some days you just get on a roll and you keep going, and he did that.

“He batted to support Smudge (Smith) firstly, and I’m sure that Smudge as senior head out there would have helped Coults get through some little periods. A guy has a day out, it’s hard to stop.”

Starc removed Chris Gayle early into the Windies’ reply before claiming the crucial wickets of Carlos Brathwaite and Jason Holder in the space of three balls in the 46th over to effectively wrap up victory for Australia.

In taking five for 46, the left-arm paceman became the fastest to reach 150 ODI wickets, and Carey knows what an asset Australia have at their disposal.

Carey added: “His real strength is finishing off an innings for us.

“He’s obviously got the wickets on the board for a reason and to do what he did again is pretty clutch.

“In a World Cup he’s a phenomenal bowler and to do that under pressure like he did was great to see him do that.”
