Indian cricketers, along with head coach Anil Kumble and BCCI President Anurag Thakur, swept the stands at Eden Gardens after the end of play on Sunday.
The drive was part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan [Clean India Mission], an initiative started by the Indian government on October 2, 2014.
Exactly two years later, on Mahatma Gandhi’s 147th birth anniversary, the Indian cricketers – including the likes of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma – took time off after play to clean the stands.
India are in complete control of the second Test of the three-match series against New Zealand at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Kohli’s men have set the Kiwis a target of 376, a score that no team has ever managed to score in the fourth innings of a Test in the stadium’s history.
India lead the series 1-0, having won the first Test in Kanpur by 197 runs. A win in Kolkata will see them take an unassailable lead in the series, with the third Test scheduled for October 8 in Indore.
