  • Harmanpreet Kaur.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced Harmanpreet Kaur as the new captain of the Indian women’s T20 team for the upcoming series against West Indies and the 2016 Women’s Asia Cup.

Harmanpreet replaces Mithali Raj as the captain of the squad. The latter had captained India at the Women’s World T20 earlier this year, where India failed to reach the semi-finals at home.

Mithali, though, has been retained as the captain of the ODI team, which will face West Indies in three ODIs from November 10. The ODI series will be followed by three T20Is with Mithali part of the squad despite losing her captaincy to Harmanpreet in the shortest version of the game.

The West Indies series will be a stern test for the Indian women as the Carribean side are on a high after winning the Women’s World T20 earlier this year.

The Asia Cup, which follows the West Indies series, will be played by six countries – India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and hosts Thailand. The Indians go into the tournament as huge favourites, having win all five editions of the tournament so far.
