At the start of the day it looked like the Indian batsmen would have to bat long if the hosts were to stay alive in the match and that is exactly what the Indian duo of Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara did.
Vijay and Pujara added 209 runs for the second wicket with both batsmen scoring centuries.
England got their noses ahead with two wickets in the final two overs of the day, with Adil Rashid and Zafar Ansari accounting for Vijay (126) and nightwatchman Amit Mishra (0) respectively.
Here, we take a look at the top tweets from the day’s play.
Full marks to the indian batsmen for the way they have countered some threatening deliveries of spin on a slightly helpful track #INDvENG

This Pitch in #Rajkot is no good for Test Cricket ... Just not a fair battle between Bat & Ball ... #INDvENG

This match is heading towards a situation where the only team under pressure could be England!

9th Test 100
35th in fc cricket
7th at home
3rd v England
2nd in successive innings
3rd fc 100 at this ground#INDvENG
India have to be very wary. Not yet out of the woods. Excellent efforts of Vijay and Pujara could be ruined if England get a lead of 120-odd

Vijay is such a crucial player. Has been silently always there. Will be great to see him and Pujara get a big one here.#IndvsEng

Not sure I agree with Athers' Barrington comparison for Pujara. If anyone epitomises old-world Test rhythms, it's Vijay. #IndvsEng
