The Supreme Court of India has sacked President Anurag Thakur and Secretary Ajay Shirke from their positions in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for failing to implement the recommendations put forward by the Lodha Committee.
The apex court welcomed the Lodha Committee’s reforms on 18 July 2016 and had given the BCCI six months to implement the panel’s recommendations, but the cricketing board continued to oppose some of the guidelines.
Speaking after the verdict, Justice RM Lodha labelled the outcome a victory for cricket and added that the game will continue to flourish.
“This is a logical consequence. Once the reforms were accepted, it had to be implemented. There were obstructions, the timeline wasn’t followed and it had to happen,” he said.
“As long as the Supreme Court order passed on 18 July stands, they had to follow it. This is a victory of game of cricket. Administrators come and go. The game will flourish, that I’m sure of.”
Senior advocates FS Nariman and Gopal Subramaniam will appoint a committee on January 19 to look after day-to-day business operations of the BCCI.
