    MS Dhoni sensationally resigned as India’s ODI and T20I captain on Wednesday after nearly a decade-long spell as skipper.

    The 35-year-old led India in 72 T20Is and 199 ODIs, including victories at the T20 and ODI World Cups in 2007 and 2011.

    Here, we look at the timeline of Dhoni as India captain.

    August 7, 2007 – Dhoni is named as India captain for the 2007 ICC World T20 after senior stars pull out of the competition.

    September 13, 2007 – Dhoni’s first match as Indian captain against Scotland is washed out.

    September 14, 2007 – India beat Pakistan via a bowl-out in Dhoni’s first completed match as skipper.

    September 19, 2007 – Dhoni is named captain of the Indian ODI team after Rahul Dravid resigns.

    September 24, 2007 – Dhoni leads India to World T20 glory after beating Pakistan by five runs in the final.

    September 29, 2007 – Just like his first T20I, Dhoni’s maiden ODI as captain is also abandoned due to rain.

    March 4, 2008 – Under the captaincy of Dhoni, India win a historic ODI series in Australia for the first time ever.

    April 11, 2008 – Dhoni leads India in Test cricket for the first time as they beat South Africa by eight wickets at Kanpur.

    November 2, 2008 – Dhoni is made permanent skipper of the Indian Test team after Anil Kumble announces his retirement.

    April 9, 2009 – Dhoni leads India to their first Test series victory in New Zealand in 41 years.

    December 6, 2009 – India reach the pinnacle of Test cricket as Dhoni guides his men to the number one spot on the ICC Test Rankings.

    June 24, 2010 – India win the Asia Cup for the first time in 15 years after beating Sri Lanka by 81 runs in the final.

    April 2, 2011 – A day no Indian fan will forget! Dhoni is named Man of the Match in the final as India win the World Cup on home soil. The Indian skipper scored an unbeaten 91 from 79 balls as the Men in Blue chased down a target of 275.

    August 22, 2011 – Dhoni suffers his first series loss as Test captain as England humiliate India 4-0 in a four-match Test series.

    January 28, 2012 – Questions begin to circulate about Dhoni’s future as captain as India are whitewashed in their second consecutive away Test series, this time against Australia.

    December 17, 2012 – More pressure mounts on Dhoni’s position as Test skipper as India lose a Test series at home for the first time in eight years.

    March 24, 2013 – Dhoni answers his critics as India thrash Australia 4-0 in a Test series at home.

    June 23, 2013 – Dhoni completes a clean sweep of ICC trophies as captain, after India beat England by five runs in a rain-reduced game in the ICC Champions Trophy final.

    April 6, 2014 – India reach the World T20 final for the second time under Dhoni, but lose to Sri Lanka in the decider.

    December 30, 2014 – Dhoni announces his immediate retirement from Test cricket after the Boxing Day Test against Australia. Virat Kohli is named as captain.

    March 26, 2015 – India are beaten by Australia in the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup.

    March 6, 2016 – Dhoni scores an unbeaten 20 off six deliveries in the final against Bangladesh as India clinch their second Asia Cup under his captaincy.

    March 31, 2016 – Dhoni is asked about retirement by an Australian journalist after getting eliminated from the ICC World T20, but brushes it aside in a humorous manner.

    October 29, 2016 – Dhoni’s last match as India captain (not known at the time) is their series win over New Zealand.

    January 4, 2017 – Dhoni resigns as captain of the ODI and T20I teams, but will continue to play for India in the two formats.
