  • Renshaw speaking at the press conference.

Australian opener Matt Renshaw explained at the end of day one of the first Test against India that his captain Steve Smith wasn’t pleased with but understood his reasons for coming off the pitch.

Renshaw retired ill due to a stomach upset, just moments after David Warner fell, leaving his side with two new batsmen at the crease.

“It came pretty suddenly. Maybe five or 10 minutes before Davey [Warner] got out, I asked Richard [Kettleborough, umpire] how long there was ’til lunch and he gave me the answer of half an hour and I was struggling a bit then,” said Renshaw.

“It wasn’t an ideal situation to be in.”

Renshaw would later come back to bat after the fall of the third wicket and scored a brilliant half-century before being dismissed for 68.

The 20-year-old went on to explain his conversation with captain Smith.

“He wasn’t too thrilled about it but he understands that when you need to go to the toilet, you’ve got to go to the toilet,” Renshaw said.

“It wasn’t an ideal scenario but it’s life, pretty much. Obviously, we just lost a wicket so there would be two new batsmen out there but it’s a hard scenario to be in and he understood.

“We’ve had a chat now and we’re all good.”
