  • Who should be the Pakistan captain going forward?

Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad doesn’t believe there are any viable replacements for Misbah, saying: “Why are we now asking Misbah to leave? Have we prepared any replacement for him?

“Unfortunately the answer is no and now it’s up to Misbah to decide when he wants to quit. This shows how weak our cricketing structure is.”

But here, we list three potential new captains for Pakistan.

Do you think Misbah should step aside and, if so, who do you think his replacement should be?

    AZHAR ALI

Has led the ODI team since March 2015 with mixed results; impressive series wins over Sri Lanka and West Indies were either side of a poor display in England. In Tests, his 1,198 runs last year are the second-most ever by a Pakistan batsmen, while his 406 in this series is a record. He’s the obvious successor to Misbah, providing the role doesn’t affect his own performances.

    YOUNIS KHAN

It certainly won’t be a glamorous pick but Younis is a stop-gap measure before the PCB decide on a long-term solution. Yes, he’s 39 and has captained before – just one win in nine Tests 2004-09 – but his leadership and personality are perfect to ensure Pakistan remain on steady ground. Issues are Younis’ reluctance to take the job while his place in the team is also under threat.

    SARFRAZ AHMED

Replaced Shahid Afridi as T20 captain last year and is Azhar’s deputy at ODI level. Could be the wildcard selection in the sense his runs, while important at No8, are not as integral to Pakistan’s overall strategy like Azhar. The energy and aggression he has brought to the T20 set-up could be perfect for a Test side that can look a little ponderous.
