  • Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas.

Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas has taken Test cricket by storm within one year. He has sped past 50 wickets in 10 Tests and proved his class in the two-match series against Australia by emerging as the highest wicket-taker.

Abbas took seven wickets on the docile Dubai surface in the first Test and did one better in the Abu Dhabi Test against the Baggy Greens, by snaring nine wickets in all by the time the seventh Aussie wicket fell in the second innings on Friday.

His nagging line and subtle movement off the pitch with the new and old ball have proven to be a nightmare for the Australian batsmen as every other bowler on either side has struggled to be even half as effective.

The 28-year-old is being labelled as the best seamer in the world at the moment and South African veteran Dale Steyn gave his stamp of approval on Friday.

“I see a new number 1 Test bowler coming… Mohammad Abbas,” Steyn wrote on Twitter.

Pakistan are scheduled to tour South Africa at the end of the year where they will play three Tests. There, Abbas is expected to face off with another wily and equally prolific seamer – Vernon Philander.
