  • Sweeping success: Ed Barnard hit 12 fours in his 73-ball, 93-run innings.

UAE coach Aaqib Javed admitted his team must improve on their batting after England thrashed the hosts by 213 runs in the opening match of the ICC Under-19 World Cup on Friday.

After England posted 315-8 in the first innings, UAE were all out for 102 in 33 overs with only captain Rohit Singh (38) and Shivank Vijayakumar (26) reaching double figures at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

“They (England) are a good team but we should’ve done much better – it was a batting pitch,” said Javed, whose team must win their next match against New Zealand in Sharjah on Sunday to have any chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

“Whoever bats first you are expecting 170 plus runs but in the second innings the pitch got even better and we should have scored 250. We need to do something about the batting.

“When there are a lot of runs being scored, you feel quite down as a fielder and coach. The batting is something I’m concerned about. They (UAE batsmen) should work harder. They should know the value of their wicket. They should stay there and put on a decent total… we should have put up a stronger fight,” said Javed.

Man-of-the-Match Ed Barnard (93), who put on a fourth wicket partnership of 151 with Ben Duckett (83), said England’s participation in the tri-series in UAE last December was immensely useful.

“It’s been a big advantage that we came in before Christmas and played a few games,” said the righ-thanded batsman. “We played UAE and got to know them quite a bit. We knew what we were facing.”

He added: “I’m very pleased to start the tournament with a win and to do well individually. It’s set us up really well for the tournament ahead for the next two games."

After being put in to bat, England got off to a strong start with openers Jonathan Tattersall and Harry Finch putting on 71 runs in 11 overs. The hosts got their first wicket with Justin James dismissing Tattersall (29). Finch then fell for 49 after being stumped by Vijayakumar off Moaaz Qazi’s delivery.

Legspinner Shahrukh Ahmed then claimed Ryan Higgins (19) in the 26th over and England were struggling at 120-3. But Barnard and Duckett steadied the innings, both hitting 12 boundaries.

However Duckett fell after Singh, called up to the senior-World T20 squad, took a brilliant catch off pacer Pankaj Samant’s delivery.

The dismissal sparked a batting collapse with UAE taking the next four wickets for 28 runs. England captain Rhodes (4) was the fifth batsman to go after being run out by Ahmed.

Samant then got the crucial wicket of Barnard and Ahmed ran out Joe Clarke (19). Samant claimed his third wicket by removing Jack Winslade (0).

In reply, UAE got off to a terrible start with Matt Fisher dismissing Chirag Suri (0) in the second over and followed it up by claiming Shorye Chopra (6).

Dan D’Souza and Vijayakumar provided some resistance with both scoring boundaries. However, the hosts were soon three wickets down with Vijayakumar gone for 26.

The right-hander, who had hit one six, was brilliantly caught by Winslade off Rhodes’ delivery. Javed’s side were then 42-4, as a superb diving catch by Tattersall ended D’Souza’s innings (7).

Singh showed some resistance with some fluent drives but was left frustrated as wickets continued to fall at the other end and UAE were reeling at 91-7 following the dismissal of Omer Rizwan (6), Qazi (5) and Sunair Khan (1).

The hosts added six more runs before Singh (38) departed in the 30th over. The match ended with two wickets in the 32nd over, with Rhodes removing Samant (3) and James being run out (1).

In the other Group D match, Sri Lanka recorded a comfortable 49- run victory over New Zealand in Sharjah.

Elsewhere in Group C, South Africa beat West Indies by 94 runs in Dubai, while Zimbabwe completed a six-wicket victory over Canada at Abu Dhabi Oval 1.
