  • KL Rahul shows his disappointment after being dismissed for 199.

India’s KL Rahul played a brilliant innings before he was dismissed for 199 on day three of the fifth Test against England at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

Rahul, who looked in fluent touch through out his innings, slashed at a wide delivery from leg-spinner Adil Rashid – only to present an easy catch to point. He was visibly heartbroken, having missed a maiden double century in Test cricket by one run.

Speaking at the end of the day’s play, the 24-year-old mentioned that he was grateful for the 199 he scored despite having regrets over that one missed run. He wants to make full use the next time he gets a similar opportunity.

“Now, you understand why your coach tells you that one run can be important. I’ve got to be grateful for the 199 I got. I played a horrible shot and that’s something I’ve to take with me,” said Rahul.

“I have to live with this and hope to make a double hundred the next time I get the opportunity.”

Rahul also mentioned that the last few months weren’t easy, having been in and out of the side due to injury.

After suffering a hamstring injury in the first Test against New Zealand in September, the opening batsman has missed four out of the seven Test matches India have played since.

“I haven’t played a lot of matches over the last couple of months, I have been injured. Being in and out isn’t easy,” he said.

“I got some runs in Bombay (Mumbai) and once I came here, this pitch was a good one and I wanted to make up. It has been a tough couple of months for me.”

The Karnataka opener added that this was the best innings of his young international career, “This will obviously be on top of the list.”
