  • Sensational: Mitch Marsh celebrates after leading Perth to victory.

Needing 12 off the last two deliveries, Mitchell Marsh dispatched seamer Robbie Frylinck over deep mid-wicket and long-on to successfully chase down a target of 165 and lead the Perth Scorchers to a stunning opening win over the Dolphins.

As expected, the final six sparked wild celebrations as it turned out to be a disappointing end for the unfancied Dolphins, who were favourites right up until the final two deliveries of the match.

It was ironic that Frylinck, who hit two sixes off Yasir Arafat during the last over of the Dolphins' innings, couldn't defend those two big hits when he came on to bowl the final over of the game.

Perth got off to a decent start and looked like they were running away with the match after a 55-run stand for the second wicket between Craig Simmons (48) and Sam Whiteman (45). The Dolphins pulled things back a little before a late blitz from Ashton Agar (15).

Earlier, Dolphins overcame a top-order collapse to put up a fighting 164 for seven after opting to bat.

Khaya Zondo anchored the innings with a well-crafted unbeaten 63 off 50 balls which consisted of seven boundaries while Keshav Maharaj (29) was the second highest scorer.

The Dolphins lifted their game during the final quarter of their innings as they hammered 67 runs in the last six overs after being reduced to 97 for six at the end of the 14th over.

Chennai Super Kings are up next for Dolphins on Monday, while the Scorchers take on Kings XI Punjab next in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Moment of the day: Twenty-20 cricket is a high-pressure game and to maintain that kind of composure that Mitchell Marsh showed on the last two deliveries is not something everyone can pull off. The two humongous sixers certainly are the moment of the match and it might not be wrong to say, they may be one of the highlights of this edition of the Champions League.

Man of the match: For an unbelievably cool head in a pressure situation and an innings that kept the Australian champions in the hunt till the last ball, literally, Marsh won a truly deserved man of the award.

    Brief scores: Perth Scorchers 165 for 4 (Simmons 48, Whiteman 45, Marsh 40*) beat Dolphins 164 for 7 (Zondo 63*, Behrendorff 3/46)
